DENGUE FEVER
DENGUE is a mosquito borne disease caused by the bite of the mosquito Aedes aegypti.
There are 4 related dengue virus serotypes DENV1 DENV2, DENV3, DENV4.
Recovery from infection gives immunity from the same serotype although reinfection is likely with a different serotype.
Outbreaks are usually seen in rainy season due to collection of water which acts as a nidus for the mosquitoes to breed.
SYMPTOMS:
Classical dengue : characterised by the triad-FEVER,HEADACHE,PETECHIAL RASH.Can be associated with muscle and joint pains
Dengue shock syndrome and Dengue haemorrhagic fever:Abdominal pain,bleeding tendencies from gums and internal organs,petechiae.
What tests to be done.
A complete blood count may reveal thrombocytopenia that is low platelet count . and increased haematocrit value.
Dengue ELISA for confirming Dengue.
It is a blood test. There are three parameters tested.
NS1 antigen: if positive, it suggests early/active infection.
IgM-If opositive,it suggests a recent infection.
IgG- if positive suggests a past infection.
Treatment:
Stay hydrated and take adequate rest.
NO ASPIRIN/IBUPROFEN.
Consult doctor when fever and other symptoms do not subside.
