URINE EXAMINATION_HOW TO COLLECT A SAMPLE
Urine examination is an important component in evaluation of any patient and it is aptly described as the Liquid biopsy of the `kidney
No advance preparation or fasting is required to perform this test
Sample can be collected at any time except when a first sample is requested as it is more concentrated
One to two ounces of urine is required in a clean container provided by the laboratory.
Sometimes, you are required to give a clean catch specimen esp for culture and sensitivity studies
For this it is important to clean the genital area before collecting urine.Bacteria and cells from the sorrounding skin can contaminate the sample and interfere with interpretation of results. With women vaginal secretions and menstrual blood also can be a source of contamination.
Women should spread the labia of the vagina and clean from front to back
Men should wipe the tip of the penis.
Start to urinate, let some urine fall in toilet, then collect the required amount and let the rest fall into the toilet
A URINE SAMPLE SHOULD REACH THE LABORATORY AT THE EARLIEST,ATLEAST WITHIN AN HOUR BEFORE THE PROCESS OF TESTING STARTED.IT IS IDEAL TO INFORM THE LABORATORY ,AT WHAT TIME YOU COLLECTED THE SPECIMEN,SO THAT THE YIELD CAN BE IMPROVED
